Lessons For Municipalities Facing Cyberattacks

Law360

October 2024

On September 12, a Special Committee of the Suffolk County Legislature released a report on the 2022 cyberattack carried out by cybercriminals using Blackcat ransomware that severely disrupted the county’s IT systems and compromised sensitive personal data of residents and employees. The report demonstrated unique challenges municipalities face in cybersecurity, including coordinating separate IT teams that arise from the separation of powers in local government. In their “lessons learned” article, as published by Law360, Pillsbury partner Richard Donoghue (Corporate Investigations & White Collar Defense) and foreign law clerk Antonia Post (Litigation) emphasize the need for municipalities to proactively strengthen their cybersecurity measures, as inadequate planning can lead to severe consequences in the event of an attack.
